内容記述 | Summary: A great variety and number of folk performing arts exist in present-day Japan. They are an important element of local culture, and at the same time play an important tole in sustaining the lives of the people in their local contexts. Iwate Prefecture, situated in the northeastern region of Honshū, is famous for its large number of folk performing arts. Some of these, especially those in the larger southern area of the prefectute, involve spedal transmission ceremonies, which function in the following way. When the skill of a particular generation of performers in a village has reached a certain level of maturity, they are recognized by the older generation with the celebration of a ceremony, open to the villagers, announcing that they have received transmission of the performing art and are now qualified performers. This ceremony is generally called soden-shiki 相伝式, literally 'initiation ceremony.' The first characteristic of this type of cetemony is that the training process undertaken by a performer is likened conceptually to the process by which the historical Buddha gained enlightenment, as detailed in the Buddhist sutras. The identification of the transmitters of a performing art with a figure who has taken religious vows makes it possible for them to live within the world of transmission of the performing art, as distinct from that of everyday life. Expressed from a different perspective, this qualifies them to go back and forth between the everyday life of the common people and the world of the other, namely the spirit world. After the ceremony is completed, the performers gain a dual identity, both as ordinary mortals and as non-mortals. This can be understood clearly from the widespread practice of erecting a memorial monument (kuyōhi 供養碑), generally at the same time as the initiation ceremony. ln genetal usage, the term 'kuyō' refers to the performance of a ceremony of prayer for the repose of the soul of a dead person, and a kuyōhi is a monument erected for that purpose. In this case, people who have completed the ceremony for the transmission of a particular performing art celebrate a second ceremony in which they write their own names on a memorial monutnent and offer ptayers to it. In other words, their living selves offer prayers to their dead selves. The idea that ttansmitters of the folk performing arts are able to travel freely between this world and the other is one that has characterized Japanese society from ancient times. This has long been rationalized with the adoption and use of the knowledge of Buddhism, a system of wisdom originally adopted from abroad. In other words, the local transfiguration of an orthodox wisdom has brought about the rearrangement and transformation of a system of knowledge as a means of sustaining the identity of a community of people in its local context. Nowadays it is commonly appreciated that the spread and development of high-speed means for transmitting information, as represented by the lnternet, is making possible the synchronic and worldwide sharing of knowledge, lt seems as if the locality or local specificity of wisdom is losing all relevance. In truth, however, knowledge is made to function as the wisdom for living from day to day, by people in places throughout the world, in a great variety of local contexts. |
